History of ARIMIDEX:
Arimidex is a medication that is used to treat fertility (Anastrozole) It was initially created in the early 1990s to treat postmenopausal women with breast cancer. Arimidex (Anastrozole) works by converting into Oestrogen whenever an aromatizing steroid is used, resulting in Oestrogen-related disorders such as gynecomastia, bloating, water retention, and heart strain, to mention a few. Arimidex (Anastrozole) acts by preventing aromatization. Anastrozole, like letrozole, is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor used to reduce circulating oestrogen levels in postmenopausal women with estrogen-responsive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors, particularly anastrozole, have emerged as the most effective endocrine drugs in the treatment of postmenopausal breast cancer due to a more promising efficacy.
Chemical Formula of ARIMIDEX:
Indication of ARIMIDEX:
Anastrozole (Arimidex) is approved as adjuvant therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer and as a first-line treatment for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or metastatic breast cancer. It may also be used to treat breast cancer in women whose disease has progressed after tamoxifen treatment.
Mechanism of action of ARIMIDEX:
Anastrazole (Arimidex) works as an anti-estrogen by selectively and competitively inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which is present mostly in the adrenal glands, liver, and fatty tissues. Anastrozole inhibits the conversion of androgens (testosterone) from the adrenal gland to oestrogen in peripheral and tumour tissues. Because the presence of oestrogen stimulates the formation of many breast cancers, anastrozole aids in the treatment of these malignancies by lowering the levels of circulating estrogens.
How to use Anastrozole:
Anastrozole has a relatively long duration of effect, allowing for a once-day dose – serum estradiol is decreased by roughly 70% within a day of starting therapy with 1mg once daily, and levels stay blocked for up to six days, ending in therapeutic discontinuation.
Side effects of ARIMIDEX:
Anastrozole may result in fatigue, headache, hot flashes, sweating, and stomach pain.
